2010 Winter Chain

Tucson, AZ; By Mark Constantine
1/18-24/2010
The Tucson Trap & Skeet Club’s 62nd annual Winter Chain concluded Sunday afternoon under sunny, but chilly skies for southern Arizona with the temperature in the mid-50s. A stiff breeze made it feel even colder and played havoc with the targets. But Dan Vogel of Ballentine, MT., didn’t seem to mind the conditions, shooting his way to the event’s High All-Around title. Vogel, a cattle rancher from eastern Montana, captured the crown in a shoot-off with Farmington New Mexico’s Mike Grady. But Grady didn’t leave for home empty-handed, winning the High Over All championship.

While the number of competitors was down overall from previous years, the conditions didn’t stop 93-year-old William Schultz of Hayes, KAN from competing. The Winter Chain began Monday, Jan. 18, and the start brought with it cold weather that included rain and blustery winds that continued throughout most of the week. Club President Lee Bachman along with Facilities Manager Dennis Gormley and Line Manger Marla Edy worked hard to keep the event going despite the horrible conditions, which resulted in the total number of shooters dropping by nearly 40 percent from last year, Club Vice President Doug Sims pointed out. In all, 963 contestants competed in 17 events.
