Casa Grande, Winter Chain 2010

Casa Grande, AZ;By Mark Constantine
02/02-07/2010
An early morning rain Sunday briefly dampened the parched Sonoran desert and the mountains which serve as the setting and backdrop, respectively, for the Casa Grande Trap Club. But the precipitation did not halt completion of the Casa Grande III, the 14th stop on the Arizona State Trapshooting Association’s Winter Chain. Casa Grande Trap Club owners Don and his wife, Tiger, and Laurie Lyons hosted 230 shooters for the six-day event, which ended with blue skies and a thermometer reading of 60-degree that felt colder thanks to a stiff breeze out of the north.
The wind threw some of the competitors off, but High All-Around Champion Art Peyton, of Peers, Alberta, didn’t struggle at all. At least he didn’t have any trouble on Sunday. Earlier in the week, however, Peyton worked hard to get the feel for a new gun. He and his wife, Diane, who won the Ladies Singles title, only made it to Arizona last week for the Winter Chain because “we were waiting on our new guns,” Art Peyton noted. Not only were they greeted with a double-dose of winning, they enjoyed waving goodbye to the cold and snow of Alberta. “We like the weather just a little bit more than what we left behind in Alberta,” Art Peyton said with a smile. Also smiling after the event was Arizona State Trapshooting Association President Larry Mane, who competed in the Case Grande III throughout the week. “They do a nice job here,” Mane said. The club was recently “upgraded with the Mercedes of trap houses” when the old ones were replaced with 14 new Pat Traps, Lyons said. She believes that’s why the numbers are up for the Winter Chain events the club has hosted this year. The Winter Chain moves on to Lake Havasu (Az.) this week.
