Cardinal Shooting Center Marengo, OH - by Tom Schewe 6/21-27/2010: Dry weather throughout the week and hot competitions were the order of the day at Ohio's premier trap shooting competition last week as trap shooters from far and wide met at the Cardinal Shooting as the Ohio ATA hosted it's world famous State Shoot. For 124 years Ohio has hosted some of the best trap competitions in the country and this year's event was no exception. Everyone brings their "A" game to Ohio!
As always, the Cardinal Facilities were in top shape for the event! John Wengerd and his crew maintain the property to a standard second to none. The event was well staffed with seasoned employees who work hard to earn the Cardinal Center's reputation as the "Shooter Friendly Facility" that it is. So much so that Phil & Vera Meyler from Bishops Mountain Shooting Centre Ireland were Phil is the club president and says " We've been coming to Ohio for more years than I care to admit. We love the people and facilities are like nothing we have back home."
SCTP Championship on Monday, the Blaser miss and out competition for a F-3 Super Trap Combo on Friday, and lots of other activities both at the campground and in the surrounding area there's enough going on to keep shooters and non-shooters alike busy and well entertained for the week.
This year's Single's Championship is Richard J Minyo (Wooster, OH) whose 200 was what it took to top Kyle R Hamliton 199 (west Lafayette), Will Guibgrich 199 (Lelina), and Tom L Cell (London) 199 and over 1150 other shooters for top honors. Peggy Ann Wise's (McConnelsville) 197 topped the Lady's, Matthew Ritz won JR Singles with a 198. Jack Aldridge (Landenberg, PA) & Richard L Sauer (Saugeties, NY) each shot 200 and finished 1,2 as non-res singles
687 Shooters competed in the Dbls Championship. Robert Mieczkowski (Wintersville) bested Russell C Hastings (Columbus) and Dean Townsend (Thornville) in a shoot off for top honors after they all ended the round with a 99. Not to out done by the men Lady Shooters Sharon Cogan and Betty Peterson need a shoot off after finishing the round each with a 93 to determine the top position. Matthew Begley's 93 topped the JR'S and Tyler Johnson's 93 lead the Sub Jr's. Rachel Hopkins (Pattonsberg, MO) won non res dbls shooting 200.
The Handicap championship was won by Robert P Zimmerman (continental), 99, after he topped Wayne Saling (East Liverpool), 98, Richard P Neff (Middletown), 97, and 981 other shooters for the top spot. The top lady handicap shooter in the state is Cindy A May from Fredericktown with her 95. Non-res handicap Champ is Andrew Zborovsky, 99, from Trafford, PA.
Other Winners include; Resident HOA Robert Caplinger (Waverly, OH), 1163, Resident HAA Ronald Smith (Dover, OH), 392, Sharon Cogan Resident HOA & HAA, 1178 & 372, Leo Harrison III Non-Res HOA & HAA, 1178 & 393, Also of note is JR Shooter Jason Huffman who took home top honors in Handicap, HOA, & HAA And Sub JR. Champ Sam Fike whose high score in the SCTP competition helped his team to win their Intermediate Advanced division. Sam also lead the Sub Jr. division as HOA (1101), HAA (374), Handicap (92) and Singles (198)
